When I was in my family practice residency, moonlighting gave me valuable experience. It helped me gain confidence in my clinical skills, and it helped me learn how to manage patient flow in a busy emergency department. (The extra income was also nice.)
I enjoyed family practice but due to a family situation and time demands I made the switch to full time emergency practice almost six years ago. I gained more control over my time while still retaining the kind of practice I enjoy. Working in small communities has the feel of family practice because I work with the same colleagues and I often know the patients I see in the emergency department.
Moonlighting is great for experience and it is an opportunity to consider full time emergency practice as a career option for you.
